Ole Miss Ladder Ball

If you are looking for the perfect backyard game while you’re barbecuing or killing time, then buying a ladder ball set is the way to go. However, you will soon find out that these fall over easily and are very flimsy. I came across a DIY page for constructing your own set using PVC. Below is a picture of this build.      DIY PVC Ladder Ball

Ladder Ball Example

I wanted to try and do exactly this but hopefully a little bit better. I planned on connecting the base together and filling it with sand. Then I sealed the bottom tees off with Gorilla glue. This would allow me to disconnect the standing portion from the base for portability.

First I went to my local Home Depot and spent a whopping $35 on the following items:

Parts Required:

(5)  3/4″ x 10′ PVC Pipe
(12) 3/4″ PVC Elbows
(12) 3/4″ PVC
Tees
(1)  Red Spray Paint
(1) Blue Spray Paint
(1) Hacksaw
(1) Gorilla Glue
(1) 50 lb. Bag of Sand

Step #1

First I cut the PVC pipe into (5) 2′ pieces and (10) 1′ pieces per ladder.  For two ladders, this leads to a total of (10) 2’pieces and (20) 1′ pieces.

Step #2

I connected each half of the bases using Gorilla glue. The glue will help keep the base from coming apart.  I poured sand down each end of the  pipe, shaking intermittently to even it throughout the pipe.  Once both haves are full, I joined them to the connecting tees using the glue.  Lastly,  I poured some of the glue into the top of the tee to seal off the pipe to keep the sand in.  Be careful not to put too much in, because you might interfere with how far the pipe slides in.

Step#3

The same process was completed for the ladder.  I connected the sides using glue; however, do not glue it to the base!   I also left the rungs free for the time being so that they can be painted a different color.

Step #4

Using Red and Blue spray paint (Ole Miss Rebel colors), I painted the base, sides, and rungs.

Step #5

Once painted, connect the rungs to the sides using glue.   Set the ladders in their respective bases and viola!  It’s ladder ball time!
